Learn about eating safe and healthy fish from our lakes
Fish Have Great Health Benefits!
-
Fish are an excellent source of low-fat, protein, vitamins and minerals.
-
Eating fish is great for your brain.
-
Some fish are packed with heart-healthy "good fats" called omega-3 fatty acids.
How Do Chemicals Get Into Fish?
-
Chemicals can end up in lakes through many routes, like wind, rain run-off, and flow from other water bodies.
-
The chemicals settle into the sediment at bottom of the lake.
-
Small aquatic creatures absorb some of the chemicals in the water or in the sediment.
-
These aquatic creatures are eaten by larger fish and those fish are eaten by even larger fish. Each fish collects and stores some of the chemicals in their bodies.
-
Through this food chain, larger fish and older fish often have more chemicals in their bodies than smaller and younger fish.

Even after trimming away all the dark tissue, some fat is still hidden inside the filet.
Poke holes in the skin or remove the skin so fat cooks away.
Cook your fish on a grill or broil in oven so fat can drip away.
