ESLA
Board Members

Meet the current Emerald Sylvan Lake Association board members for 2021.

Each year, three positions come up for re-election. Those interested in running for a position on the Emerald Sylvan Lake Association board must be nominated by an active member of the association. Association members will vote on all nominees at the annual Corn Roast event in August. Board members are elected for a three-year term and all volunteer their time and effort. Once their term is over, they too must be re-nominated in order to run again.

The board acts on behalf of the association and in the association's best interests. It is responsible for managing the ESLA budget and allocates funds for things like road maintenance around the lakes, weed control, and lake safety.

Emerald Lake

Board Member Since 2020

Term Ending 2023

For several years, Janet's family rented a cottage on Pickerel Lake for their summer vacations. In 1964 her parents, Dick and Midge Palmer, bought property on Sylvan Lake behind the island and built the little brown cottage with big windows. Her brother and his wife, Jim and Kit Palmer, now own the family cottage, where she and her husband enjoyed vacationing for 50+ years. In 2018 Janet decided to live on the lake year round and purchased a home on Emerald Lake.

Lisa's family build their cottage on Sylvan Lake in 1966/67.  She spent her entire childhood on the lakes, living at the cottage in the summer and as well as enjoying fall, winter and spring there. The cottage has been her special little slice of heaven her whole life.

Lisa has been on the board since 2016 and sees herself as a steward of our lakes, helping to keep them healthy and safe for all.

Justin Duimstra

Web + Social Committee

Emerald Lake

Board Member Since 2016

Term Ending 2022

Justin grew up spending his summers at Emerald Lake until the sale of the family cottage in 2001. After years of telling his wife about his favorite place on earth, they were blessed with the opportunity to buy back the same cottage in 2016. Now Justin gets to share the traditions and experiences he had as a kid with his wife and children...who also think of the cottage as the best place on earth! Most weekends you will find Justin pulling his kids skiing or tubing, cruising around the lake on the golf cart or working around the cottage. He's also come to be known as "the t-shirt guy".

Beth and her husband, Jay, were blessed to purchase her mother's family cottage which was originally built in 1920 by Carl & Esther Hartmann. Her mother, along with her cousins and the many neighbor friends would travel from Chicago to spend summer weeks at the lake. She recalled hours of swimming, hiking through the bog, bailing out their leaky rowboat, playing the piano and lots of singing in their little cottage. As a teenager, Beth was also lucky to spend many days and nights at the VanDam's swimming, boating and walking around the lake a million times (before all the golf carts)! Today, Beth and her family carry on the cottage traditions with their children and four granddaughters and love seeing them experience the joys of lake living!

Since 1979, Kevin and his family have spent their summer weekends on Emerald Lake. And now he gets to share this wonderful place with his grandchildren too! Kevin learned to water ski, barefoot, trick ski, kneeboard, tube, scuba dive, and most recently, wake surf, here on our lakes and has had the privilege of teaching his children and grandchildren to do the same. Kevin enjoys yard work, gardening, cutting/splitting wood and being involved around the lakes helping others. After most of his work on the roads and cottage are compete, you may find him relaxing with his family. He is thankful for all of God’s blessings and gives his praise to Him!

Zach Wood

Lakes & Fish Committee

Emerald Lake

Board Member Since 2020

Term Ending 2023

Zach and his wife Ashley built their home on Emerald Lake five years ago and are raising a family in Newaygo. Zach enjoys fishing, jet skiing, swimming in the cove, ice fishing and snowmobiling on the lakes. Being a full-timer on the lake, he's been a big asset in helping to monitor the lakes and roads throughout the year.

Our lakes have a unique history.

The Lakes have supplied ice to homes in Newaygo when there was no electricity, lumber for many houses throughout the midwest, and marl for the concrete in many buildings.  We have many pictures of the Lakes in different decades and a very interesting history.  The Oak Leaf Club has assembled a "History of the Lakes" book available for purchase.  Contact the Club for more details.
